RP2350-powered Game Boy reconstruction project with NFC cartridge loading.
Description
PicoDMZ is an open-source hardware reconstruction project focused on recreating the original Nintendo Game Boy (DMG) experience using modern RP2040 and RP2350 microcontrollers.
The objective is not just to emulate games, but to preserve the physical feel and interaction model of the original hardware as closely as possible:
- original DMG shell
- original buttons and DMG-LCD-06 board reuse
- AA battery power
- embedded audio
- cartridge-inspired workflow
Internally, the project combines emulator integration, embedded development, hardware experimentation and low-level optimization to push small microcontrollers close to real-time Game Boy performance.
Support helps cover:
- prototype hardware
- displays and embedded components
- donor Game Boys and replacement shells
- testing equipment
- development time and documentation
If you enjoy embedded systems, retro hardware, emulator development, weird performance bugs or projects that probably should not work as well as they do — welcome aboard 😄
